SPEAKER SPOTLIGHT: Writing fearlessly; Dave Bidini’s thoughts on honest storytelling

At Emerge 2018, guests were able to listen to renowned author and musician Dave Bidini talk about how he created his local, not-for-profit newspaper, The West End Phoenix.

From touring with the Tragically Hip to working for the National Post to even visiting the Northwest Territories, Bidini has pretty much seen it all. Since 1998, Bidini has written 12 books with another being published in the fall of this year, and all talk of his adventures with storytelling and how he got to be where he is today.

Bidini was a phenomenal speaker, as he was able to quiet the audience to the point that you could hear a pin drop. At the same time, though, he was able to make the audience laugh and make them really ponder what he was speaking about. The crowd asked him thought-provoking questions and he did so in return, making his presentation definitely one to remember.

Bidini’s presentation centred on the importance of telling stories and this quote demonstrates this best:

“And I think that’s the thing I always want to tell the people who really create anything or want to create anything, you know, as a living, as a livelihood; that all of our stories are important because they’re our stories.”
